Tolga Cigerci is one of the best players on the team after his return to Hertha BSC. In the fight to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga, the 30-year-old, who moved from Ankaragücu to the capital in winter, could “tip the scales”.
The midfielder recently proved that against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The four-time Turkish international was instrumental in two goals in the 4-1 victory for Berlin.
Hertha coach Sandro Schwarz was also satisfied with the returnee’s performance: “It’s extraordinary to have such a quality, to immediately feel responsible, even though you’ve only completed a few training sessions, and to help the lads on the pitch with clear commands and coaching.”
Teammate Richter praises newcomer Cigerci
Cigerci, who went to Turkey from Berlin in 2016 and played for a total of four clubs (Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Basaksehir and Ankaragücü) in the following years, brings much-needed stability to the Hertha team.
Teammate Marco Richter made it clear that it felt like “he’s always been part of the team”. “Sometimes he calms the game, sometimes he makes it fast.”
Cigerci himself, however, leave the hymn of praise cold. He focuses on the tasks in the Bundesliga and is happy that he was able to settle in quickly: “I was away for six and a half years, but nothing is foreign here. I know many employees and a few colleagues, I feel comfortable and try to perform to help.”
Cigerci became German champion with Wolfsburg captain Arnold
Before his first attempt at Hertha BSC, the soon to be 31-year-old played for VfL Wolfsburg for a long time. There he went through the youth teams of the Wolves and won the German A youth championship together with today’s VfL captain Maximilian Arnold.
Cigerci certainly wants to follow up the win against Gladbach with another success. With Borussia Dortmund, however, a difficult task awaits the midfielder and his team.
