Province approves demolition of old Ostend swimming pool

Persons or bodies who still have objections now have 60 days to go to the council for permit disputes.

Action group Dement in Ostend had at the time appealed against the municipal demolition permit for the former municipal swimming pool. The non-profit organization is known for its fight for the heritage in Ostend, and sees in the old swimming pool “the architectural quality of the hall and its potential functionality as a very important element worthy of protection.” So they want to prevent the building from going under the demolition hammer, and hope for a new use for the building.

When approving the demolition permit, Ostend stated at the time that the building was suffering from concrete rot. “The building is in really bad shape,” says alderman of environmental permits Kurt Claeys. “The demolition marks the start of the revaluation of the historic site with the thermal baths, the galleries and the Wellington. The site will be sown with grass for the time being to restore it to its original state. A study will be carried out to evaluate the construction and layout of the future open space with greenery. The use of the site is closely related to the redevelopment of the Thermae Palace.”
