TSG 1899 Hoffenheim has found a successor for the dismissed André Breitenreiter. Pellegrino Matarazzo takes over as coach for the Kraichgauers. The 45-year-old has been given a contract until June 30, 2025. The American most recently worked for Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart, where he was released in mid-October. In 100 games, the Swabians scored an average of 1.22 points under his leadership.

Matarazzo has a TSG past: between 2017 and the end of 2019 he worked for six months as head coach of the U17s and then as assistant to Julian Nagelsmann (59 games) and Alfred Schreuder (19 games) before moving to Stuttgart at the turn of the year 2019/20 went. With VfB he managed to get promoted to the Bundesliga and stay up in the league. However, he had to leave after a winning streak of nine Bundesliga games earlier this season.

“Rino not only knows our club, but also a large part of the team from his own experience. Conversely, we also know him and are therefore convinced that he is the right man for the head coaching position. Not only did he lead VfB Stuttgart to promotion, but he also proved his qualities in the fight to stay in the Bundesliga. He can handle the pressure and knows what is required in this position. With his game philosophy, his view of football and the way he treats people, he fits in 100 percent with TSG and their path, far beyond the current situation,” said TSG manager Alexander Rosen.

Matarazzo added: “Since I’ve lived in the region since 2017, I’ve seen developments at TSG up close even after my move and have followed my past at the club particularly closely. The situation is undoubtedly challenging. I’m convinced of the quality of the team and approach the task full of energy and confidence. TSG stands for attacking, courageous and fresh football. I want to quickly play the football with the team that has distinguished them for many years and that they have already impressively brought to the pitch this season.”
