Waarse football club WMC stops after almost half a century due to high energy costs

The canteen is closed, the showers are off and the fields are deserted: the board of SV-WMC stops after 48 years with the football club at the Vork in Heerhugowaard. The club has been struggling for years with a declining membership. “In addition, we have to deal with rising energy costs,” explains chairman Loek van Hinsbergen.

The permanent selection already left last week, Van Hinsbergen tells media partner Dike and Waard Central. According to the board, the high energy costs are not the only cause. “There has been a lot going on in recent years. Many members have run away due to corona, we are in a not so good location and we also made a restart in 2019.”

The Waardse club had to pay 3,600 euros in gas in the last quarter. “That is simply not possible,” Van Hinsbergen responds.

G teams

The fact that the football club has now ceased to exist hits the loyal members and supporters hard. “After 48 years, this hurts. Especially the group of disabled people have a hard time with it. They were so looking forward to sports and that is now over. Together with the municipality, we are still looking into whether there is a possibility that the three G- teams get a different home.”
