Today it was announced which stations are most appreciated by train passengers. At least as interesting is to look at station buildings that are no longer in use. Which station buildings in North Holland are there still where no train stops? NH News lists a number for you.
You could just drive past it: disappeared train stations. Often the remains of these defunct stations are still visible. In some cases, an old station building has been transformed into a residence, and in other cases it is a meeting location. Every reason for us to make a tour past abandoned stations.
Medemblik
Medemblik Station now stands proudly next to the Town Hall of Medemblik, the former town hall. The building and the railway date from 1887. Other stations of the railway between Hoorn and Medemblik are also still there. The building now houses Museum Stoomtram Hoorn – Medemblik. Museum visitors can take the original route with the steam locomotive, which also stops at Wognum, Twisk and Opperdoes. Nowadays there is a stop just in front of the location of Medemblik station: Bus station Medemblik.
Opperdoes
At De Kaag in Opperdoes is the old railway station, which connected the village between Hoorn and Medemblik. The building consists of two parts. One part was one service house for the station employee and his family, the other part of the building served as an office with a waiting area for the travellers. Like all other stations, the station building in Opperdoes was completed in 1887. The station was used until 1935 by travellers used. Subsequently, the station was built in 1940 tot 1941 again briefly used by passenger rail traffic.
Oosthuizen
The building of Oosthuizen station is perhaps the least recognizable as a former train station. The station was inaugurated in 1884 and served as a train station until 1938. A cheese factory currently uses the old station building. Before that there was a dairy in the building.
Avenhorn
Avenhorn station was part of the route between Zaandam and Enkhuizen. The station was opened in 1884, at the same time as the Zaandam – Enkhuizen line was put into service. The station’s location is striking, as it is closer to Scharwoude than Avenhorn itself. Avenhorn station was used as a station building until 1940. The building is now a residence and a national monument.
Station Haarlem Rijksstraatweg
The Rijksstraatweg station building in the former municipality of Haarlemmerliede was taken into use in 1912. The station has been part of the Aalsmeer – Haarlem railway wine. The location was very remote at the time, as the surrounding area was largely undeveloped. The old station building did not serve as a train station for long: travelers have only been able to use it for 23 years. Today, the building along the Amsterdamsevaart is a residential house.
Amsterdam De Vlugtlaan
Amsterdam De Vlugtlaan station was opened in the capital in 1986. With this expansion there was a direct connection between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Central Station. Amsterdam Lelylaan and Amsterdam Sloterdijk were also taken into use on the day of the opening. In 1997, a metro station with the same station name was built near the station. After an expansion of Sloterdijk station, which also connected Amsterdam to Schiphol, the station was closed in 2000. Burg. the Vlugtlaan is still a stop for bus, metro and tram traffic.
Bloemendaal
Bloemendaal station may be the odd one out in this list, because the destination via the train network still exists, but the old station building of the village is no longer used by travelers. The building, which was opened in 1900, is located on the outskirts of Haarlem. After a renovation, a new platform was built that could be reached by travelers via a tunnel. A modern platform roof was installed there. The building has not been used as a station for travelers since 1997. The building is now used as a meeting location, among other things.
