Magnusson injured for a long time – Magdeburg signs a replacement

Status: 03.02.2023 12:36 p.m

SC Magdeburg will have to do without the injured Omar Ingi Magnusson for a long time. In the search for a replacement, the people from Elbestadt found what they were looking for at league competitor HSG Wetzlar.

Backcourt player Vladan Lipovina is moving from HSG Wetzlar to SC Magdeburg with immediate effect. The 29-year-old left-hander signed a contract until June 30, 2023. SCM announced this two days before Cup cracker on Sunday against THW Kiel (3 p.m. in the ticker in the SpiO app and at sport-im-osten.de).

Magdeburg was reacting to the absence of top scorer Omar Ingi Magnusson, who will be unavailable for an indefinite period after an operation on his heel. The Icelander sustained the injury at the World Cup. “Omar’s absence hits us extremely hard, of course. Everyone knows how important he is for our attacking and defensive game,” said SCM trainer Bennet Wiegert. Magnusson is currently sixth in the Bundesliga top scorers list with 102 goals in 15 games.

Integrate Lipovina as soon as possible

The SCM had to react and quickly found a solution. “For us, we had the short-term chance to strengthen ourselves with Vladan in the right backcourt. We saw in the first training session that he would help us in attack and defense. Now we want to integrate him as quickly as possible, but of course we will give him the time to do so that he needs,” says Wiegert.

Lipovina comes to the Elbe from HSG Wetzlar. The 29-year-old Montenegrin was previously in the Bundesliga with TV 05/07Hüttenberg, Rhein-Neckar Löwen and HBW Balingen-Weilstetten. The Montenegro international also gained experience in the European Cup and Champions League at his stations in Metalurg Skopje and the Löwen. “Magdeburg is one of the best teams in the world and has one of the best coaches in Benno. So I’m very happy that the move worked out and I’m grateful that Wetzlar agreed to my request,” said Lipovina.

780 goals in 236 Bundesliga games

He learned to play handball in his home country with RK Lovcen Cetinje and ended up in the Bundesliga for the first time at HSG Wetzlar via stations in Ciudad Encantada (Spain) and Metalurg Skopje (North Macedonia). This was followed by moves to al-Nasr Sports Club Dubai, Hüttenberg, Rhein-Neckar Löwen and Balingen before finally signing again with HSG Wetzlar in 2022. The 29-year-old has scored 780 goals in 236 Bundesliga games.
