Ruiz, 36, was shot at by two prisoners in the Ilama prison, Santa Bárbara department, in western Honduras, where he had been held since 2017, the National Penitentiary Institute (INP) said in a statement. “Immediately the authorities and security personnel (from the prison) mobilized to the module, requesting the two suspects and confiscating the weapon with which they would have committed the homicide,” said the INP. The Police Investigation Directorate (DPI) and Forensic Medicine went to the prison to carry out “the investigative procedures and cadaveric removal of the deceased,” he added.
The Penitentiary Institute ordered the prison authorities to provide full collaboration to the entities in charge of investigating the murder of Ruiz and announced actions and measures to prevent new violent acts in the prisons of Honduras.

Ruiz was serving a 30-year sentence for the crime of femicide against Sofía Trinidad, and another 15 years for the murder of María José. The Alvarado sisters were murdered in November 2014 and Ruiz was accused as the perpetrator of the crime, who claimed to have mental disorders, which was false, so that he would not be convicted, according to medical tests performed on him.
The two sisters, who disappeared on November 13, 2014, were murdered when María José was about to represent her country at the end of that year in the Miss World pageant held in London. The lifeless bodies of the Alvarado sisters were found on November 19, 2014, six days after their disappearance, buried in a place near a spa in the city of Santa Bárbara where Ruiz’s birthday was celebrated.
