Already in 2019 Tesla boss Elon Musk presented the Cybertruck, the new electric pick-up from the US electric car manufacturer. Originally planned for 2021, the market launch has been postponed several times – first to 2022, then to 2023. Now the time has actually come: production is scheduled to start this year.
Production is expected to start this year
In recent months, Tesla has made some progress in terms of cybertruck production, reports TESLARATI. Among other things, the IDRA Giga Press machines were delivered to the Gigafactory Texas, where the vehicle is built.
In the unofficial Tesla podcast “Ride the Lightning” with Ryan McCaffrey, Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen now revealed that the Cybertruck is basically finished “from a design point of view”. During the entire production process, however, “constantly working on every detail”. “So we learn things through the engineering phases and the manufacturing development phases that we can improve, and we do that,” says von Holzhausen.
While early production is planned for mid-2023, according to TESLARATI, series production is scheduled for the end of the year. Von Holzhausen did not dispute McCaffrey’s statement that production was slated for less than six months, nor indicated that anything would delay the initial stages of manufacture.
Fans can look forward to new features
The Tesla chief designer also hinted in the podcast that the Cybertruck should surprise Tesla fans with some functions that are not yet known – but without revealing details.
However, von Holzhausen confirmed one thing: The electric car manufacturer is considering offering yoke steering as a standard option for the Cybertruck. Although prototypes with yoke steering have already been sighted, Tesla has not yet confirmed whether it will commit to this for the vehicle. However, von Holzhausen explained in the podcast that he considered this to be “useful”.
No price known yet
Meanwhile, the question remains at what price the Cybertruck will be available. In 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk warned that the new e-pickup could cost $1 million if the company didn’t get production of the new 4680 battery cells under control. However, that seems somewhat unrealistic. Previously, there was talk of a targeted price of less than 45,000 US dollars. This, it was said later, could not be maintained.
On the other hand, Tesla recently reduced its prices for the Model 3 and Model Y in China, Japan, Germany and the USA, among others. And so it could be that Tesla is also opting for cheaper prices for the Cybertruck to compete with the competition that has already brought their electric pickups to the market – such as Rivian the R1T, Ford the F-150 Lightning and General Motors the Hummer EV – to keep up.
