Gery Veldhuis is leaving the Northern Netherlands unit as police chief

Gery Veldhuis will stop as chief of the North Netherlands Police next month. He does this at his own request. Joop de Schepper will take over his duties on 1 February, while the corps management is looking for a permanent successor.

Even so, Veldhuis is not leaving the police yet. In his last year before his retirement, he will start a project, “aimed at making new colleagues skilled in the field of investigation”. He also returns to the street, in the basic teams of Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland.

“It characterizes the person of Gery Veldhuis that he will end his extensive career of more than forty years within the police in this way: involved in the (investigation) profession and close to colleagues on the street,” says chief of police Henk van Essen.

Veldhuis has been police chief in the Northern Netherlands since 1 January 2018. He held the same position in Limburg in the previous ten years. In 2005, Veldhuis was deputy chief of police in Drenthe.
