Review: Samia :: Honey

No, don’t worry: Christmas is actually over. But as the song unabashedly titled “Nanana” plays, it’s easy to get lost in the festival calendar. It jingles and tinkles, harmonizes and melodies like the Xmas contribution from your favorite boy band – only better. Otherwise, Samia Najimy Finnerty’s second album, which has the bee-sweet title HONEY for a reason, is quite contemplative – especially in comparison to the much more indie-pop debut THE BABY from 2020.

The tranquility, especially evident in the almost nave-worthy “Sea Lions” or “Kill Her Freak Out”, is of course a trick, because behind the sometimes even little girl-like sound, which only occasionally features rattling beats, indie rock fits and the one or other distorted guitar, the 25-year-old sometimes hides bitterly angry lyrics in which emotional states are explored down to the deepest teenage abysses. It’s about unhappy pregnancies, the feeling of worthlessness, bullying, speechlessness, depression and suicide, but at least the dreams are still in vain. Christmas comes every year.
