A high fever forced the new parents to take their little one to a hospital in New York in August 1987. Only 19 days old Carlina got in the way.
In the wee hours of the morning, the baby was nowhere to be found. He had been kidnapped. By Joy White and Carl Tyson the nightmare is told in the evening’s movie Abducted: The Carlina White Story. It tells the true story of how childless and suffered several miscarriages Annugetta “Ann” Pettway kidnapped Carlina and raised her as his own daughter. He changed the name Nejdra as “Netty” Nance.
Carlina’s doubts about Ann were already aroused in her teenage years, but the truth dawned on her little by little only later. In 2005, Carlina started expecting her first child, for whom she wanted to get health insurance. However, to issue it, a birth certificate was needed, which Carlina had not received from Ann despite her requests. He couldn’t have it, because Ann had never had it.
This time, however, Ann obtained a fake certificate for Carlina. Carlina thought it was genuine, but the authorities revealed it to the young woman. After that, Carlina got part of the truth out of Ann. However, this claimed that the drug addict mother had abandoned Carlina.
Five years later, the right side of things became clear to the then 23-year-old Carlina. She found her own baby photo in the database of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which had information about missing children. DNA tests confirmed in January 2011 that the woman who grew up as Netty was indeed Carlina, and she was able to return to her biological parents.
Ann Pettway eventually surrendered and was punished. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was released in 2021.
