OudsbergenStuck deer are now almost daily fare for the Natuurhulpcentrum, but today the team was allowed to turn out for a less common passer-by. A wolf got stuck in a backyard in Oudsbergen, but managed to get out quickly. “Before we arrived, he had already left.”

Around 9.30 am, the Natuurhulpcentrum received a phone call from a local resident in Opglabbeek. “I think there’s a wolf in my backyard,” he said. The residents had the chance to photograph the animal, but not for long. “Before we arrived, the wolf had already left,” says Dries Damiaens of the Natuurhulpcentrum. “We looked at the CCTV footage afterwards, and it turned out that he was only stuck in the backyard for a minute. Then he managed to crawl under the wire.”

Construction works

It is the first time that the Natuurhulpcentrum has been called in for a stuck wolf. The team itself suspects that the animal was frightened by nearby structures. “A few houses away is a large open field, where construction is currently taking place. The wolf crosses over that field to go back to the forest. Perhaps he was frightened by the construction and then fled to the garden.”

“We are called up about 100 times every year for deer that have become stuck in a garden. They also find it much more difficult to find their way back from the garden. A wolf is a bit more ingenious about that, which is also apparent from this story.”
