It’s January; the gyms are filling up again with people with good intentions. In recent years, the weight room has become especially popular among young people. More and more of them use nutritional supplements to see results even faster, sometimes with negative consequences.

The research shows that in the Netherlands more than a quarter of athletes take one or more supplements before or after exercising. About half of them suffer from tingling, headache, insomnia, heart palpitations and stomach complaints. The powder contains substances such as caffeine, creatine and taurine, which are also often found in energy drinks, but in higher doses.
