Biomedical Engineering master’s degree program celebrates its 20th anniversary

Today, more than 500 students from 68 nations have already successfully completed their international studies in medical technology in Lübeck and their work, e.g. T. recorded in Germany. Mariya Ali, 2022 graduate from Pakistan says:

“This course was recommended to me by a former student. Many different laboratories, internships and the student conference enabled a wide range of practical insights into different areas of work in medical technology. I made great friends in Lübeck and have wonderful memories of that time. Pursuing my master’s degree in this program is one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

Pioneer course in Lübeck

Based on more than 25 years of cooperation on campus, many resources could be bundled to develop an attractive offer. At that time there were not many international courses at German universities or on the Lübeck campus. In several respects, the new innovative BME course should therefore assume a pioneering role: as the first international and first joint course of study by the University of Lübeck and the Technical University of Lübeck (then Lübeck University of Applied Sciences). In addition, the English-language course was one of the first to be accredited by an external agency, which was introduced with the Bologna process.

In addition, as a cooperative course, it is also a symbol of very good institutional and interdisciplinary cooperation in teaching, administration and research. Two other joint master’s degree programs were developed based on a comparable concept: “Hearing Acoustics and Audiological Technology” (2017) and “Medical Microtechnology” (2020). In addition, the subject has made a significant contribution to intensifying the cooperation between the two universities in the research area, including in the joint competence center “Technology and Engineering in Medicine – TANDEM”.

From the very beginning, the course has enjoyed a large and stable demand from interested parties. The course management was recently handed over to Prof. Stefan Müller. His predecessor was Prof. Stephan Klein, who was in charge of designing the master’s program in 2001 and developing it further with other participants for 20 years. Prof. Thorsten Buzug from the University of Lübeck continues to support the course as deputy head. Ms. Silke Venker, who has been coordinating the cooperation between the two universities for over ten years, will continue to support the course.

An alumni meeting is planned for February 2023.
