Due to pipe damage in an above-ground line, thousands of households in the north and east of Berlin are currently having to get by without functioning heating and hot water.

The damage was discovered during construction work, as a spokesman for the energy company Vattenfall announced on Monday evening. However, the repair work on the damaged area was completed around 9:30 p.m., and the heat supply is now being gradually restored, it said.

Within the next few hours, all households should be supplied with heat again. Since it is a “sluggish system”, the necessary pressure in the district heating network must be built up again over several hours, said a spokesman. RBB24 had previously reported on the failure of the heat supply.

When exactly the damage in the area of Storkower Straße was discovered, whether it was a leak or other damage and since when the households were cut off from the heat supply, the spokesman could not say when asked in the evening. It was also unclear exactly how many households were affected.

As RBB24 reported on Twitter, around 35,000 households are said to have been affected. The Vattenfall spokesman initially did not want to confirm this number.
