Disturbing message from education: more and more students in secondary, higher and university education are dropping out. Cause: learning delay due to corona. Respond to the statement of the day: Students should get more help to clear up their corona backlog
In the 2021-2022 school year, many more students dropped out than in the previous two years, according to a report from the Ministry of Education.
Outages are growing
In MBO, the number of dropouts without a diploma rose by 18 percent to 51,000 students. In higher professional education, 15 percent of the roughly 110,000 first-year students dropped out, compared to 12 percent during the corona years.
According to the Ministry of Education, the level and motivation of the students have gone down. Due to the corona pandemic, final exam students did not have to take an exam in 2020. In 2021 and 2022 they were given more time for the exams, an extra resit and were allowed to cross out a subject.
Exam requirements back to normal
Secondary school exam requirements will largely return to normal this school year, Minister Dennis Wiersma recently announced. But is that enough to make up for the backlog students have incurred due to corona? Is more needed to keep students motivated?
