Kiev mayor fears “apocalypse” in winter: “Residents must be ready to leave city quickly” | War Ukraine and Russia

The mayor of Kiev warns of a possible “apocalypse” this winter if Russian air strikes on infrastructure continue. “Residents do not have to evacuate now, but they must be prepared to leave the city quickly,” says Vitali Klitsjko.

“Kiev could lose power, water and heating facilities. When it gets too cold to live in houses, the apocalypse can happen. Like in the Hollywood movies,” he says in an interview.

The capital has set up 500 heated shelters, but that is nowhere near enough to accommodate all 3.6 million inhabitants in the event of a complete blackout. The temperature can drop to minus 15 degrees in the coming time. If there is no electricity, the water must be drained from buildings to prevent the water supply network from being destroyed by freezing.

Klitschko is urging residents to build up emergency supplies of food and water. Clothing and documents should be within reach if a quick departure proves necessary. But we are not there yet. According to Klitsjko, the city now has only a 20 percent power shortage. In addition, international actions are underway to bring generators to Ukraine. According to the mayor, “tens of thousands” are needed.
