Driving without a license in public is prohibited
Quite a few novice drivers are looking for opportunities to learn to drive a vehicle with a driving instructor outside of official driving lessons. Some want to reduce the price-intensive driving lessons to a minimum, others want to gain confidence through independent practice before they take part in busy traffic for the first time. Even if the intentions are understandable, practice units outside of official driving lessons are usually not recommended.
The Road Traffic Act clearly states that driving vehicles on public roads without a valid driver’s license is strictly prohibited. It is irrelevant how heavily frequented the supposedly suitable practice areas are, even the parking lot of a supermarket outside its opening hours, for example, is considered an area of public traffic. Even driving without a driver’s license on private property is fundamentally illegal unless the area is structurally separated from public space, for example by means of fences, walls or gates, and the owner has given permission.
Driving without a license can result in severe penalties
Anyone who disregards these regulations must expect severe penalties. According to Section 21 of the Road Traffic Act, driving a vehicle without a valid driver’s license is a criminal offense punishable by a fine or even imprisonment. In addition to the driver of the vehicle, the owner of the vehicle who allowed the unlawful journey to be prosecuted can also be prosecuted. In any case, driving without a license is not a trivial offense to be trivialized, even if it is done for practice purposes.
Preparation for traffic training areas
Novice drivers who are looking for legal ways to improve their driving skills outside of official driving lessons should look out for traffic training areas. These traffic training areas are on private property that are clearly separated from public traffic and on which driving a vehicle without a license is permitted. A fee is generally required to use the facility and a private vehicle must be available. Furthermore, an accompanying person who is in possession of a valid driver’s license must be in the car during the entire exercise period. In return, novice drivers are given the opportunity to improve their driving skills in a wide variety of simulated traffic situations at traffic training areas.
