De Zeehoek victim of empty wallet at Medemblik: swimming pool must close

The municipality of Medemblik, in consultation with the board of De Zeehoek, has decided to close the swimming pool in Wervershoof. This is because there are insufficient financial resources to keep the swimming pool open in a safe way. It is still unclear when the swimming pool will close permanently.

Because is there a future for swimming pool De Zeehoek from Wervershoof? That question has been around since 2017 on the table in the community. The plan went from new construction to renovation, after which they opted for refurbishment. Now, in consultation with the board of the swimming pool, the plug will still be pulled.

“This is not a pleasant decision to make, because of the consequences for the staff and the people who enjoy using the swimming pool,” says alderman Gerben Gringhuis. “Recently we were told that resources at the pool are running out fast. We thought now was the time to bring this out.”

Earlier than expected

The closing of the swimming pool in Wervershoof comes earlier than expected. In September, chairman of the swimming pool, Jos Oostenbrink, hoped that the swimming pool could remain open for a few more years with a possible subsidy. But the bag of money is not forthcoming, forcing the board to close the doors.

“In addition, we are faced with huge energy costs and uncertainty about prices in the coming years. Now that the municipality wants to develop the location for housing and there are no financial resources to keep the swimming pool safely open for a long time, we have no choice but to work on a neat termination of the operation of the swimming pool,” said Oostenbrink.

The pool staff has been informed.
