Iran released more than 700 prisoners after the World Cup victory

Iran’s success in the World Cup has brought joy to the people of the troubled country. Citing a report by Mizan Online, AFP reported on Wednesday that Iran released as many as 709 prisoners after Iran defeated Wales 2-0 last Friday.

The Iranian website Mizan Online reported that some of those freed had been imprisoned “in connection with recent events”.

Iran has seen massive protests in recent weeks. The people were outraged when the police arrested Mahsa Aminin in September. A 22-year-old woman died during pre-trial detention.
