TeamNL after the first day of Games shared third in the medal standings
TeamNL occupies joint third place in the medal standings after the first day of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Only Norway and Slovenia did better than the Netherlands on Saturday. Speed skater Irene Schouten gave the Dutch delegation its first gold medal by winning the 3000 meters.
Norway won gold in cross-country skiing, where Therese Johaug received the first medal of the Games. The Norwegians also took biathlon gold in the mixed relay (4 x 6 kilometers). Slovenia took gold and bronze in ski jumping.
The Netherlands shares third place with China and Sweden, countries that are also in the same place. The Chinese took gold in the mixed relay in the short track, where TeamNL missed the medals after Suzanne Schulting’s fall. Sweden captured the first Olympic title of these Games in freestyle skiing.
In the medal standings, the number of gold medals counts more than the total number of medals.
