Rector of DSTU detained on charges of fraud and forgery

The rector of the Dagestan State Technical University (DSTU) was detained on charges of fraud on an especially large scale (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code) and official forgery (part 2 of article 292 of the Criminal Code), informs Department of the Investigative Committee for the region. university leads Nurmagomed Surakatov.

Searches were carried out at the rector’s house, at the place of his registration and in his office, the issue of his arrest is being decided, the Investigative Committee reports.

The investigation believes that in 2015-2018 the suspect was a member of an organized criminal group, which included other officials of the DSTU. They transferred money from the university scholarship account to the settlement accounts of trusted persons, and then cashed it out. In addition, according to the message of the Investigative Committee, they forged the signatures of university employees in payrolls on receiving salaries and bonuses and received cash from their personal account “without posting them to the cash desk of the educational institution.”

As a result, according to the department, more than 90 million rubles were stolen.

According to the university website, Nurmagomed Surakatov was approved as the rector of DSTU in March 2020. He began working at the university in 1997. In 2007, Surakatov became dean of the Faculty of State and Municipal Administration, and three years later, Vice-Rector for Economics. In 2017, he was appointed Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.
