The American Logan Sargeant has taken another step in the direction of Formula 1 – and thus further reduced Mick Schumacher’s remaining hopes.
The 21-year-old finished sixth in the Formula 2 sprint race in Abu Dhabi and is third in the championship going into the final race of the season on Sunday (10:00 a.m./CET).
The traditional Williams team has promised the young man from Florida the last Formula 1 regular cockpit for 2023. However, Sargeant must first get the necessary points for the super license one class below. Regardless of his penalty points account, he would certainly have this if he finished the Formula 2 season in sixth place in the drivers’ standings.
Sargeant’s lead in seventh place is a comfortable twelve points before the final race, with a maximum of 26 points still up for grabs on Sunday. Mick Schumacher has to vacate his cockpit at Haas at the end of the season after two years.
Sargeant’s Carlin teammate Liam Lawson (New Zealand) took victory in the sprint on the Yas Marina Circuit. The Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (MP Motorsport) has had the Formula 2 title in his pocket since September.
