Especially in the 80s, the comedian who had a great career was best known for his trick where he smashed a watermelon with a hammer in the middle of a stage performance.

According to TMZ, Gallagher died early Friday morning at the hospital. The comedian had suffered several heart attacks in the past ten years, and he had already been in poor health for several months.

The cause of death has been reported as extensive organ failure.

Gallagher’s career took off like a rocket in 1975 when he appeared on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. He soon became one of the most famous American comedians. In 2004, he was chosen among the hundred best stand-up comedians.
