The German handball players are worried about the continued use of circle player Meike Schmelzer at the European Championships. The 29-year-old was eliminated in the early stages of the DHB selection’s 36:28 victory against the Netherlands with a knee injury.
Schmelzer will now allow himself to be examined more closely. “It’s good that we now have a three-day break to get a thorough diagnosis and recover from it. Of course we hope that she will continue to be available to us,” said assistant coach Jochen Beppler.
After the convincing success against the world champion of 2019 and the subsequent 28:27 victory of Romania against Spain, Germany is currently third in the main round group II with 2:4 points. “We had our backs to the wall, now we’re back in the tournament,” said backcourt player Julia Maidhof. “Everything is still open and we can find new hope.”
The next opponent on Tuesday is the still undefeated Olympic champions France, and at the end of the second phase of the tournament next Wednesday we face Romania. “We want to be at the top level again,” Maidhof said.
