Bruges dims street lights in the city center by half

Seventy percent of the street lighting in the center of Bruges is via energy-efficient LED lamps. But to make it even more economical, the city dims the street lights between 11:30 am and 5:30 pm. Bruges is also taking measures in the sub-municipalities: the street lighting is switched off completely between eleven in the evening and five in the morning. “Because the city center is already so ‘dimmed’, it is sufficient to dim the street lights. This would not have been possible with the old street lighting,” says alderman Mercedes Van Volcem.

“We have already done random tests and it appears that the inhabitants of Bruges did not notice the dimming of the lamps,” says Mayor Dirk De fauw. “We are not going to dim everywhere, by the way: in the entertainment district and the two main shopping axes the lights remain on at 100 percent at night.”

Together with Fluvius, the city will carefully evaluate the situation, Van Volcem promises: “If adjustments have to be made, they can be done quickly.”
