Checkpoint’s RFID tags get the recycling ‘all clear’

Checkpoint Systems was one of the first global label manufacturers to prove that its RFID tags can be included as part of household waste collection.

Affixed to millions of garments, handbags and shoes, Checkpoint’s RFID-enabled tags give brands and retailers greater control and visibility at every stage of the supply chain for more effective inventory management and helping to avoid costly stock-outs.

Until now, however, it was questionable whether shoppers could throw the tags in their domestic recycling bin, leaving millions of RFID-enabled tags and labels in landfill. As more brands and retailers commit to more sustainable practices and materials, it’s important consumers know they can recycle labels at home.

To provide consumers, retailers and brands with an extra level of reassurance, Checkpoint partnered with PTS – an organization with more than 70 years of experience researching fiber-based solutions – to conduct a series of technical tests to ensure that the labels are suitable for normal curbside recycling. The Germany-based research company tested a range of checkpoint labels. All labels – including the Vortex m750 PET+PE, Njord m730 Paper and Vortex m750 Clean PET labels – achieved an excellent overall recycling rate of more than 94%.

The PTS technical report concluded that consumers can safely dispose of all Checkpoint RFID tags in a household recycling bin without having to separate the inlay from the tags.

Inge Fleuren, Global Product Solution Manager RFID, Checkpoint Systems, noted:

“Companies and brands of all sizes and industries are investing in a wide range of measures as part of their sustainability agenda. We are increasingly aware of the efforts in recent years to minimize food waste and promote sustainability in the food sector. With the huge investments in sustainable manufacturing and retailing, it is vital that whatever is applied to a product – at any point in the supply chain or in-store – must not unknowingly impact the environment in a negative way.

“RFID tags are an essential part of fashion retailers’ strategy to maximize profits, but as with all aspects of business performance, it’s important that they do not distract from a sustainable supply chain. We want our products to be disposed of seamlessly and easily, in line with our customers’ green values.

“We are thrilled that our RFID and RF tags have passed all of PTS’ rigorous testing, which means they have little or no impact on a tag’s recyclability, allowing customers to safely dispose of and trust their tags that they also support sustainable practices when they buy goods with our labels.”
