US fashion retailer Saks has partnered with leading international recycling company TerraCycle to launch its Saks Beauty Recycling Program, which gives empty cosmetic packaging a second life.
The initiative, which runs through Saks.com and Saks Fifth Avenue stores across the US, allows customers to recycle all brands’ empty haircare, skincare and cosmetics packaging. The new program was designed to be convenient for customers: they can either return the boxes using prepaid shipping labels downloadable from Saks.com, or they can return them in the designated collection bins at their Saks Fifth Avenue location deliver on site.
All collected waste is then sorted according to its composition, for example plastics and metals, and processed into new raw materials that are processed into new products such as furniture and garden tools.
“With the Saks Beauty recycling program, we offer our customers a convenient solution for recycling a wide range of empty cosmetic packaging from all brands. We’re proud to launch this program on our platform as an extension of the Saks shopping experience and empowering our customers to be more sustainable,” said Kate Oldham, senior vice president of beauty at Saks, in a statement.
“At Saks, we recognize that the choices we make every day can have a significant impact on our environment. Through our partnership with TerraCycle, we hope to inspire our customers to join us in this initial effort to reduce the waste generated by hard-to-recycle packaging and keep otherwise unrecyclable plastic packaging out of landfills,” added Cara Chacon, Senior Vice President of Environmental, Social and Governance at Saks.
