Choi Cheon-sik, a member of South Korea’s national fire service, testified to the Washington Post that the drama happened when people began pushing backwards as the crowd gathered in a narrow street for a Halloween celebration.

According to the same source, more than 400 aid workers from across the country, including virtually all available personnel in Seoul, took to the streets to treat the injured. An official death toll has not yet been confirmed.

Police also confirmed that dozens of people were being resuscitated on the streets of Itaewon, while many others were taken to nearby hospitals.
