The diesel at the gas station is now more expensive than the petrol. This completely eliminates the advantage that diesel drivers previously had compared to petrol drivers.
The fact that diesel has become more expensive is due to the war between Russia and Ukraine. The Netherlands is largely dependent on Russian diesel. Diesel will soon no longer be imported from Russia, causing demand to outstrip supply. This affects the liter price.
A diesel car is more expensive per month, because the road tax is twice as high. Yet it was previously profitable for people who drive a lot of kilometers to drive a diesel car, because the fuel itself was cheaper than petrol, and a diesel car is relatively more economical than a petrol car. The tipping point was about 35,000 kilometers per year: if you were above this limit, a diesel car was always cheaper.
Now that diesel is more expensive than petrol, that advantage is disappearing. As a result, people who are in possession of a diesel come home from a cold fair. Where they used to be cheaper, they now pay in all cases much more than people who drive a petrol car.
The advantage could be restored if diesel drivers have to pay less road tax. Do you think diesel drivers should be compensated, possibly temporarily?
