Corona in Drenthe: 1,652 positive test results

Most new positive tests come from Emmen (306), followed by Hoogeveen (249) and Assen (206). It should be noted here that RIVM is dealing with significant backlogs. Tens of thousands of positive tests from the past few days still have to be processed.

In Drenthe, 15 corona patients are currently in hospital, 5 of which are in an IC bed. There are no new deaths from the coronavirus in our province.

Nearly 83,000 positive tests nationwide

82,961 new positive corona tests have been registered throughout the Netherlands in the past 24 hours. That is the highest number ever for a Thursday. Last Monday and Tuesday the figure exceeded 100,000, which was partly due to a backlog of positive test results and a technical malfunction at the end of last week.

RIVM registered 556,712 positive tests in the past seven days. That amounts to an average of 79,530 reports per day, the highest level ever. The actual number is even higher, as the backlog increased by 41,000 over the same period. So in reality, about 600,000 people will have tested positive.

The number of deaths is still stable. In the past day, RIVM received a message that eleven people have died as a result of their infection. It concerns two people from Amsterdam and also residents of the municipalities of Rotterdam, Groningen, Dordrecht, Weert, Veldhoven, Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Borsele, Leiderdorp and Zundert.

In the past week, 61 deaths at the hands of the corona virus were recorded. That is comparable to the level over the past few weeks.

Backlog at RIVM continues to rise

The number of positive corona tests that have not yet been registered has risen again. The backlog has increased from 104,000 to 113,000 confirmed infections over a period of 17 days. In the past week, the number of missed cases rose by 41,000. The computer systems cannot handle the high number of positive tests. The RIVM and the GGDs are working on a solution and at the beginning of this week they managed to register a net 50,000 overdue positive tests.

If a laboratory determines after a test that someone has the corona virus, the result is entered in the computer program CoronIT. From there, the notifications are automatically forwarded to a second program, HPZoneLite. The source and contact investigators use that program to know who to call to find out where people have been infected and who may have infected them.

The confirmed infections from HPZoneLite go to RIVM. It collects the results and comes up with figures about them every day and every Tuesday with a weekly overview. Due to the high number of infections, that flow is stagnating. There are more positive tests than the system can handle. Because the results can be entered properly in CoronIT, the GGDs and RIVM know how many people have tested positive and how large the backlog is.
