The Volunteer College, together with the Taalhuis in Hoogeveen, is organizing a meeting about low literacy on Tuesday 15 February from 19:30 to 21:00.
Everyone should be able to participate in society, but one in nine people has trouble reading, calculating and using a computer or smartphone. If someone is unable to apply these skills or only to a limited extent, they are low literate.
Careful Reference
Early detection and careful referral can prevent many problems and make daily life more pleasant. But what are these signals? How is less literacy recognized? How is this discussed? Sometimes people feel ashamed and find it difficult to accept help offered. In short, how is it ensured that these people receive the right help?
Annet Hofstra is the Language House Coordinator at the Hoogeveen Library. Hofstra provides the lecture and shares her experiences with the participants. In practice she experiences that referral could be better, but then the referrers must know what to look out for. In addition, low-literate people are resourceful in covering up and it is sometimes difficult to find out why someone reacts the way he or she does.
