According to special speculaas inspectors, the Ouderkerk baker Out makes the tastiest filled speculaas in North Holland. The small entrepreneur could use that boost, because the bakery is having a hard time. “Energy costs rose from EUR 3,500 to EUR 20,000 per month.”
Bakker Hans Out, who lovingly rolls the autumn pastry out of the oven every day, experiences the positive attention as a ‘warm bath’. “Especially in this time when we have quite a headwind. We can finally talk about something else and not just about misery.”

Because these are not fun times for the small entrepreneur, says co-owner Edwin Meissen. “Energy, raw materials, gas prices. We’re having a lot of trouble with it at the moment.” He thinks it will be a while yet. “Fortunately, we are a company that has existed for 125 years and that has allowed us to build up a buffer. But after two years of COVID and with the energy crisis over it, it will be very difficult for us.”
Almost Dutch tastiest
But now it’s time to party. Speculaas inspectors from the bakery organization Beko have recently eaten their fill and found the filled speculaas from baker Out to be the best in North Holland.
In total there were just under three hundred entries and it was close to being able to call himself the baker of the tastiest filled speculaas in the Netherlands.

Bakker Out wants to continue baking delicious filled speculaas for a long time to come, but as long as there is no national or municipal support, the uncertainty will increase.
