Despite a high vaccination rate of around 80 percent, the number of new infections in Spain has been increasing rapidly for weeks. The seven-day incidence was most recently at a record level of 850, after reaching an annual low of around 18 in mid-October.
Seven other cases at FC Barcelona and Real Madrid
Three other players from FC Barcelona and four from Real Madrid have meanwhile tested positive for the corona virus. First, Barça announced the cases of former Dortmund Ousmane Dembele as well as central defender Samuel Umtiti and young player Gavi on Wednesday, followed by record champions Real with positive results at Thibaut Courtois, Vinicius Junior, Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga in the late afternoon.
Barcelona had already announced the infection of defensive player Jordi Alba on Tuesday. According to the club, all players are doing well, they are in quarantine at home. Real has already had twelve corona cases to complain about since mid-December, including defense chief David Alaba.
