SC Paderborn took advantage of the moment and passed Hamburger SV in the table of the 2nd Bundesliga for a direct promotion place.
Coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team won 3-0 (1-0) against SV Sandhausen on Sunday (October 16th, 2022) and, thanks to an outstanding goal difference, overtook HSV, who were tied on points with HSV, who lost 3-0 at FC St. Pauli on Friday had lost. Table leaders Darmstadt 98 have two points more than the two closest pursuers.
Sandhausen slipped down to 15th place in the table due to the sixth loss of the season.
Pieringer hits the crossbar
The Paderborn team won more than 60 percent of tackles in the first half, had almost 68 percent possession and a successful pass rate of almost 90 percent, while the guests remained under 70 percent in this category.
The lead of 1:0 was therefore completely fine, even if the SVS was not even inferior in the shots at 5:8. However, referee Tobias Reichel’s last shot before the half-time whistle offered a brilliant chance to make the result clearer. But Dennis Srbeny’s shot landed in the face of Janik Bachmann, who immediately fell to the ground and had to be treated.
In the first 45 minutes, Srbeny’s strike partner scored just one goal. After a successful double shot, Marvin Pieringer shot the ball under the crossbar in the tenth minute. Shortly before, the sand houses, who had won the relegation duel against 1. FC Magdeburg 1-0 the previous week, had carelessly lost a good counterattack chance.
Early decision
After the break, Paderborn quickly caught up on what they had missed. After a nice pass from Srbeny, Robert Leipert made it 2-0 with a low shot (47th). The even more one-sided game was decided seven minutes later. Jannis Heuer headed in a corner kick after Srbeny had missed a good chance just before.
Pieringer then celebrated what he thought was his eighth goal of the season, but the review revealed that the striker was just offside when he passed the shot into the top corner.
First cup, then league again
Games in the DFB Cup await both teams: The SCP has to deal with Bundesliga club Werder Bremen (19.10.2022, 6 p.m.), the SVS has league competitor Karlsruher SC as guests at the same time.
On the 13th matchday, SC Paderborn will take on the in-form Eintracht in Braunschweig (Saturday, October 22, 2022, 1 p.m.). At the same time Sandhausen is required away in Regensburg.
