Queen Mother Elizabeth’s traditional crown is in the middle of an international ownership dispute.
At the coronation of King Charles on May 6, Camilla will also be crowned queen consort. Buckingham Palace made the announcement earlier this week.
At the coronation, Camilla is believed to wear the Queen Mother’s tiara, adorned with one of the UK’s most famous and controversial crown jewels.
The Queen Mother wore the crown in question at the coronation of King George in 1937.
The disputed Koh-i-Nûr diamond in the crown is being demanded in India to be returned to its original owners. The gemstone originates from India, where it was once brought to Britain. In Britain, it ended up as part of Queen Victoria’s collection. The ownership of the gem has also been disputed in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The controversy over the jewel in India overshadows the upcoming coronation. The Indian People’s Party commented to The Telegraph that wearing the crown jewel Koh-i-Nûr at Camilla’s coronation brings up painful memories of the country’s colonial past. According to the party, 5-6 generations of Indians have had to suffer under foreign rule for five centuries.

The Koh-i-Nûr diamond was also seen by the queen Alexandra’s above at the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902 and the Queen consort of King George V Mary’s above at the 1911 coronation.
The crown was placed on the Queen Mother’s coffin after her death in 2002.
Charles will be officially crowned king on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London.
Charles became the monarch of the United Kingdom when his mother Queen Elizabeth died on September 8 at the age of 96.
Charles has reportedly wanted his coronation to be a low-key affair. Despite possible reforms, the official formula of the coronation remains in accordance with tradition and no changes are made to it. The upcoming changes concern celebrations rather than the coronation formula.
According to Hov, the coronation ceremony follows a more than 900-year-old tradition.
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth, Camilla received the title of queen consort. This was Elizabeth’s wish as well. Camilla has previously been known as the Duchess of Cornwall.
Queen consort refers to the spouse of the reigning king, as distinguished from the title Queen, which refers to the reigning queen.
