Monique H. denies involvement in swimming pool murder: ‘Jan had a double life’

Monique H. from Hollandscheveld denies having anything to do with the murder of Jan Elzinga in 2012. She was Elzinga’s partner at the time. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) suspects that she, together with her brother Marcel from Nieuw-Roden and her mother from Roden, ordered the murder.

Monique H. is not doing well psychologically. That is why she was released a few weeks ago. She’s still a suspect. “I feel bad. Home is better than in detention, especially if you are wrongfully detained,” she said.

Elzinga, 40, was shot dead in 2012 near the swimming pool in Marum. Two men have been convicted of the murder. Monique H. and her brother Marcel were already suspects at the time, but the Public Prosecution Service was unable to complete the evidence. Based on a statement from one of the killers, the Public Prosecution Service now thinks it has a case.

Monique H. explains that Elzinga’s behavior changed. Problems arose in the relationship when it turned out that Elzinga was in a relationship with another woman.

After the murder, Elzinga’s life was scrutinized. In his own words, “a cesspool” opened up for H.: he would have been involved with several women and had engaged in shady dealings. “I read things in the file that I knew nothing about. He actually led a double life.” In 2012, she said honestly about what she did know. “I always told everything honestly in 2012, but I was never believed. A lot of what I stated at the time about those actions was not believed then and has now come true.”

The in-laws came back into the picture as the client for the murder after a statement from crown witness Willem P., one of the men who was convicted of the murder. P. supported his statement with a (as it turned out later) falsified SMS conversation with Marcel H. According to P., the family had Elzinga murdered because Monique was mistreated. She maintains – even after questions from the judges – that she was not mistreated by Elzinga.
