Sports director Sven Mislintat does not make his own future at VfB Stuttgart dependent on the fate of coach Pellegrino Matarazzo.
“It’s clearly my job to keep this club on track or to get it on a better track. No, I don’t do that,” said the 49-year-old after the 0-1 (0-0) defeat Swabia against 1. FC Union Berlin on Sunday evening for “SWR”.
VfB is the only team in the Bundesliga still without a win and is penultimate in the table with just five points. Mislintat had always defended Matarazzo in his now more than 1000 days as Stuttgart coach.
He did the same on Sunday and spoke, among other things, of trust and support. However, he no longer gave the 44-year-old Italian-American a new job guarantee.
“The problem is the discrepancy between game performance and results, the very alarming nine-game point total and the league situation,” said Mislintat. Next Saturday (3.30 p.m.) VfB meets bottom VfL Bochum.
