Artists pack statues for AMOK . festival

An initiative of Kunstencentrum Kaap that allows established values such as poet Peter Verhelst to speak, but also lets young talent unleash on Bruges.

Veerle Michiels, artist: “The intention is that we remove a monument from view for a while. You get a kind of friction. It is giving attention and at the same time also ‘protect me’, protecting the images.

On the Wednesday market, the statue of the fifteenth century Bruges painter Hans Memling is completely wrapped. The role of images in public space is a current theme. Do some images have to disappear because of their past? Jonas Vansteenkiste, artist: “The four statues we have packed are not so controversial, but they are in places that deserve a little more attention or love. Memling is on the square on the Wednesday market. A little further on, Van Eyck is standing on a very nice square.” The Amok festival will run until October 9.
