Nicaragua expels EU ambassador | Abroad

Muscheidt has been ambassador to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, since October 2021. She was summoned to come to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Moncada told her she had been declared persona non grata.

According to local media, Managua does not accept that she called on the Nicaraguan government to “restore” democracy before the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday. The government would speak of “interference and disrespect for national sovereignty” by the European Union.
The news has not yet been officially confirmed.

The EU and the United States have imposed various sanctions on Nicaragua and its leading figures for human rights violations over the past four years. The EU has also called for the release of more than 200 imprisoned opponents, including seven candidates for the November 2021 presidential election. President Daniel Ortega was then re-elected for a fourth consecutive term without strong opponents, who were arrested or forced into exile.
