NCAP crash test: German Teslas with top marks for quality

• Model Y from Grünheide convinces NCAP safety testers
• Highest overall rating in the test
• Asian manufacturers are also convincing

The association of European transport ministries, automobile clubs and insurance associations, NCAP for short, regularly examines vehicles with regard to their safety. The Model Y, produced in the German Tesla factory in Grünheide, was also part of the most recent evaluation round and was able to convince the testers.

Model Y beats the competition

In the latest Euro NCAP test, the Model Y achieved a 5-star rating. Various vehicles were examined with regard to the following criteria: protection of adult occupants, protection of children, protection of other vulnerable road users and safety support. The Tesla vehicle built in the Gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin apparently convinced the safety inspectors across the board: “The Model Y built in Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory achieves an impressive 97 percent in occupant protection for adults and an almost perfect 98 percent in Safety Assist, with full marks for its lane assist and new driver monitoring system based on a cab camera. In Euro NCAP track tests, Model Y’s camera-only vision system performs remarkably well when it comes to avoiding collisions with other cars, cyclists and pedestrians,” they summarized Safety testers summarized the results in a press release.

The Berlin Tesla thus received the highest overall rating of all vehicles that underwent a safety check according to the new Euro NCAP test protocol. “Congratulations to Tesla for a truly outstanding, record-breaking assessment of the Model Y. Tesla has shown that only the best is good enough for them and we hope they continue to strive for this goal in the future,” commented Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen the test results.

Tesla emphasizes autopilot advantages

Tesla itself referenced the findings in a blog post. The company highlighted the benefits of the Autopilot system in particular: “This result was achieved with Model Y vehicles equipped with Tesla Vision, our camera system and our neural network processing system, which is now standard in all Tesla vehicles which will be delivered in North America and Europe. This assessment was a result that many did not think possible for vehicles without radar,” the manufacturer’s publication reads.

Asian manufacturers are also convincing

In addition to the Berlin Tesla Model Y, four other vehicles received a 5-star rating, but were behind the US electric car manufacturer in the overall score: the Korean electric SUV Genesis GV60, the electric models ORA Funky Cat and the WEY Coffee 01 from the Chinese company Great Wall Motor Company and the Kia Niro, which only got the highest rating with the optionally available safety package.

“We’ve seen good results from some Chinese manufacturers in the past, but also some very bad ones. This year, Euro NCAP will test more Chinese cars than ever before and Great Wall really sets the standard for others to follow,” NCAP said after the tests. The security testers write about the Korean brands that they “performed very well” in this test round.
