The campaign was a success with the support of a general practitioner, practice nurse, physiotherapist or neighborhood sports coach. 250 people in Drenthe walked many kilometers every week for twenty weeks. According to the sports umbrella organization SportDrenthe, it is precisely this solidarity that is the success factor. “Some find it mentally difficult and experience barriers,” says Esther Witte on behalf of this organization.
“Some are a bit overweight, or have problems with their knees. Others have nothing, but have insulin fluctuations and therefore like to do it together. That is safe, close to home. They practiced for twenty weeks. One started at 500 meters and can now walk 2.5 kilometers, the other finishes with a distance of 10 kilometers.”
The twenty-week period was festively concluded. “People really like it and it’s very nice,” continues Witte. “They are really looking forward to the medal and are proud to receive it.” The many small rain showers did not spoil the fun. “Of course not! A rain shower is also part of it. After all, we live in the Netherlands”, Witte laughs.
The success of the action does not end this weekend: the participants have a taste for it. “It was nice to conclude this with each other, but next week we will just continue,” says Lina. “We are now running five kilometers but the challenge is to get to ten kilometers.” And will that work? “Definitely,” concludes Henk.
