Bundesliga: BVB wins a derby against Schalke – but still mourns

Status: 09/17/2022 7:21 p.m

Borussia Dortmund celebrated a 1-0 (0-0) prestige win against Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga. A big downer, however, is the injury to Marco Reus in the Revierderby.

When the score was 0-0, the BVB captain twisted his ankle after 30 minutes after a duel and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher, obviously in great pain. Ugly: The Schalke fans chanted “Goodbye” when Reus was transported to the catacombs.

Schalke equal to BVB

In terms of sport, the derby hadn’t been very eventful up to that point. Outsiders Schalke were on a par with Dortmund, didn’t allow much on the defensive – but didn’t manage to be dangerous themselves either.

Giovanni Reyna, who came on for Reus, had a great opportunity to take the lead, but missed a header from close range (35′). There weren’t any other big chances before the break.

Schlotterbeck prevented 1-0 for Schalke

The combative component dominated the game in the second half as well. BVB had significantly more possession of the ball and also won the majority of duels – but in the decisive moments Schalke kept getting a foot or another part of the body in the way.

And suddenly the guests had a great opportunity. Kenan Karaman finished in the opposing penalty area and Nico Schlotterbeck prevented Schalke from taking the lead (62′).

Moukoko redeems Dortmund

There were many indications that the first district derby would end goalless after a year’s abstinence because Schalke played in the second division – but then Dortmund struck. Youssoufa Moukoko headed in after a cross from Marius Wolf and scored the acclaimed goal for BVB from close range (79′).

A little later, the hosts almost finally decided the game. Reyna curled the ball just past the opposing goal (81st). Because Schalke were no longer dangerous in the final phase, BVB lost Reus, but secured the derby victory.

Dortmund has to go to its neighbor in Cologne

On Matchday 8, Borussia Dortmund has to go to Müngersdorf to 1. FC Köln (Saturday, October 1st, 2022 at 3:30 p.m.). A day later, FC Schalke 04 welcomes FC Augsburg (5:30 p.m.).
