Heritage Day puts 350,000 people on the road | Inland

The 34th edition of the Open Monument Day in Flanders has, based on samples and the number of participating monuments, set out at least 350,000 people. Organizer Herita speaks of a very great success today. After two editions that were influenced by corona, visitors appreciated that the spontaneous character of the Open Monument Day has returned.

The theme of this edition was ‘sustainability’. Interested parties could participate in 800 activities at 600 locations throughout Flanders. Locations were opened in seven out of ten Flemish cities and municipalities, including 200 new locations. 48 castles and 45 mills were opened and the doors of a hundred private homes were exceptionally open to the public. Thousands of heritage professionals and volunteers were standing by for them.

“350.000 people set out to visit the heritage in their neighborhood or city. It feels good that there is such great support in Flanders for our monuments and landscapes. Something we must continue to work on”, says Matthias Francken, director from Herita.

Popular highlights were the Sint-Jacobskerk in Antwerp, the Archbishop’s Palace in the host city of Mechelen (5,400 visitors), the Castle of Laarne, the Castle of Horst, the Deca brewery in Vleteren and the Castle of Heers.
