The work of art the Potato Men at Centrum West are shining with their golden noses in the sun. But recently there is suddenly a fence around them. Are we not allowed to go near them anymore because is there something else going on? We’re going to investigate.

Why is there an ugly fence around the ‘Potato Men’? Is there a risk of collapse? Or to prevent vandalism? Or is the artwork being used as a bicycle shed? Is it temporary or permanent? These questions came to our editors and we are happy to sort them out.
Maintenance and Inspection
The artworks in Zoetermeer are serviced once a year. Organization Kunstwacht inspects the artwork to see whether the material and the work are still in good condition. In case of problems, a report is sent to the municipality, which then decides what can be done about it. The fence around the Potato Men has been placed by Kunstwacht for an inspection and maintenance.
brown spots
The artwork consists of two large boulders from a Scandinavian quarry. The bottom boulder shows some brown spots. According to Kunstwacht, these have been there since the beginning and that is a natural phenomenon. So don’t do anything about it! The Potato Men will be brushed and waxed until their noses shine even more.
