The Pole has accumulated five goals in four games and his hunger seems insatiable. The record is held by Messi and he seems impossible to beat
Robert Lewandowski wants to enter the history books The Polish striker wants to beat the record for goals set by Leo Messi in the 2011/12 season when he scored 50 goals in the League in 37 games. The Argentine lived in those days a fierce competition with Cristiano Ronaldo for being the most prolific striker in our country.
Until the appearance of Messi and Christian, the record seemed safe with Hugo Sánchez having scored 38 goals in 35 games with Real Madrid in the 89/90 season. Not even Ronaldo Nazario in his spectacular year with Barça was able to exceed that bar, remaining at 34 goals.
The arrival of the two great rulers of football in the 21st century changed the balance forever. Cristiano struck first beating ‘Hugol’ record with 40 goals in 2010/11. Messi would respond the following year with the aforementioned 50 goals.
The rivalry continued in the following seasons with Messi achieving 46 goals the following year and with Cristiano in 2014/15 reaching 48 goals in 35 games. Technically it is not the best mark, but it is the best average with the Portuguese having scored 1.37 goals per game for the 1.35 that Messi achieved in his year of 50 goals.
The mission
Lewandowski has the complicated mission of overcoming these barriers and he is going to try it with the endorsement of having achieved in a Bundesliga season 41 goals in 29 games with Bayern. That is the best mark of a Robert who left Germany last year having scored 35 goals in 34 games.
Records are there to be broken, but in order to aspire to them, Lewandowski will have to stay healthy and, above all, just as inspired as he has been up to now. At 34 years old, it seems that time has not made a dent in his great abilities facing the door as he showed in his debut in the Champions League with Barça with a hat trick.
Xavi Hernández will know how to find the necessary motivation for Lewandowski to continue scoring every day and perhaps the calendar can help them with a very demanding World Cup for Poland which suggests their elimination in the group stage. Curiously, the faces will be seen with a Messi who wants to take away one of his most precious treasures.
What Lewandowski will not be able to take away from him will be his record as the top scorer on the most occasions in the League. Leo has eight under his belt and no one can cough at him in this regard. Zarra followed with six wounds and then with five Di Stéfano and Quini. Only the aforementioned Cristiano (with three), Luis Suárez and the last top scorer Benzema have the Spanish Golden Boot as active players in their record.
