After Tedesco-Aus: RB Leipzig is negotiating with Marco Rose

Status: 07.09.2022 20:02

On Wednesday morning (September 7th), Domenico Tedesco had to resign as coach of RB Leipzig. A few hours later, according to MDR information, his potential successor is already on site for negotiations – it is preferred candidate Marco Rose.

RB Leipzig has a few hours after Leave of absence from Domenico Tedesco apparently already found a successor as head coach. According to MDR information, those responsible are currently negotiating in Leipzig with the preferred candidate Marco Rose.

On Tuesday evening, the 45-year-old was still in the stands at the Salzburg Champions League draw against AC Milan and, according to media reports, was flown in immediately. Rose should be on the coaching bench against his previous employer Borussia Dortmund as early as possible on Saturday.

Marco Rose: What speaks for him?

Rose has long been traded as a potential successor to Tedesco. What speaks for him: He was born in Leipzig, has no contract, earned his first merits at RB Salzburg until 2019 and would be ready for a new task after the sudden exit in May at BVB, which he had led to runner-up. Rose would be the “new impetus” wanted by RB CEO Oliver Mintzlaff – for the team and the fans.

As a Leipziger, he would probably have more credit than Tedesco, who ultimately did not earn anything by winning the cup, the semi-finals in the Europa League and the best second half of the Bundesliga season in 2021/22. What also makes Rose interesting is the start of the contract. After all, the team, which is currently in a bad way, meets Dortmund on Saturday (Rose’s ex-club I), then has to go to Real Madrid and finally to Mönchengladbach (Rose’s ex-club II).

Sports director search drags on

In addition to the head coach, there is obviously still persistent advertising for the new sports director. In the balance is an agreement with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where Max Eberl – Mintzlaff’s preferred candidate for the orphaned post – still has a dormant but valid contract.

Missed start costs Tedesco the job

RB Leipzig had on Wednesday (September 7th) after the disappointments in the first weeks of the Bundesliga and the 1:4 home defeat separated from head coach Domenico Tedesco and his assistants Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky at the start of the Champions League group phase against Shaktar Donetsk.

Tedesco took over the job Beginning of December 2021 by the hapless American Jesse Marsch and subsequently led the team, which had slipped to eleventh place in the Bundesliga at the time, into the Champions League. To top it all off, the best second half team in the league won on 21 May the DFB Cup thanks to the final victory on penalties against SC Freiburg – RB Leipzig’s first major title win ever.
