Handball: Kiel wins rapid Supercup against Magdeburg

THW Kiel defeated SC Magdeburg in a fast-paced Supercup and won the first title of the handball season.

Kiel won the game in Düsseldorf in front of 5,900 spectators with 36:33 (16:16). Magdeburg took part in the game as German Champion 2022, Kiel as winner of the DHB Cup, which THW had won in the final against Magdeburg 28:21. Nikola Bilyk was Kiel’s top scorer with eight goals, while Omar Ingi Magnussen scored six for Magdeburg. “It’s not about who scores the goals, we want to win titles together,” said Bilyk on Sky.

Kiel started much stronger. Goalkeeper Niklas Landin parried numerous balls, his team-mates scored well up front, THW led 8:3 (11th). The SCM then took its first break. After that, the German champion got better and shortened the lead to 11:13 (22nd).

Kiel’s new signing Karl Wallinius then had to leave the field with a red card – Wallinius grabbed Gisli Kristjansson’s throwing arm (23′). Shortly before the break, Magdeburg managed to equalize to 14:14, with a 16:16 it went into the break.

Kiel remains the winner in the turbulent final phase

After the break, the game continued at high speed. Tim Hornke was particularly noticeable at Magdeburg, while Steffen Weinhold took control of the game at Kiel. THW gradually gained an advantage and took the lead by 27:24 (49th).

Magdeburg stayed close, Magnus Saugstrup reduced the goal to 27:28 (52nd) and a little later Omar Ingi Magnusson equalized 29:29 (54th). The teams stayed level in the final phase until 32:32. Four minutes before the end, Kiel was outnumbered, but took the lead through Wienczek with 33:32 (58th). Steffen Weinhold (59th) then completely decided the game in Kiel with 34:32.

Kiel’s goalkeeper Tomas Mrkva destroyed Magdeburg’s last hopes when he saved a penalty from Magnusson (59′). In the end, Kiel won 36:33.

First game in Germany under new rules

The game, led by the two referees Tanja Kuttler and Maike Merz, was the first major game in which the new rules applied. The World Handball Federation IHF made fundamental changes to its rules in May. They mainly affect the time game, the throw-on zone and head hits against goalkeepers.

Bundesliga starts at the weekend

The Bundesliga season begins this week, with the first four games scheduled for Thursday. On Sunday, SC Magdeburg starts the season at home against ASV Hamm-Westfalen (2 p.m.), THW Kiel is also expecting TVB Stuttgart (4.05 p.m.) on Sunday.
