Festive reception for brand new world champion show band from Assen

With wide smiles the Mercurius Showband played their winning march in the center of Assen last night. Last summer they became first at the World Music Competition (WMC) in Kerkrade. That is why they were now festively received by an enthusiastic public and a proud mayor at the town hall.

On the weekend of July 23 and 24, Mercury competed in the First Division class. The band from Assen became world champion in the Marching section, in which a course has to be completed to a self-chosen marching music. In addition, there was the show part. With ‘Music at the Proms’, a medley on recognizable music, she scored even more points than on the march. This was good for gold with distinction, but it resulted in second place in the show section.

Actually, the show band participated for the experience, band member Judith van Dorst previously told RTV Drenthe. That’s why the win was unexpected. “Initially it was all very unreal. The WMC has become more than an experience and we are very proud of that. The hard work has paid off for us.”

It all took a while to get the results. “On Saturday we played the march. We got the points at that time, but the ranking only a day later. We all kept counting what other corps achieved for scores. The moment we saw that we became world champions, we were super happy. Everyone was jumping.”
