Warsaw (AP) – Former Portuguese soccer star Paulo Sousa wants to give up his position as head coach of the Polish national team. The President of the Polish Football Association PZPN, Cezary Kulesza, confirmed reports from Brazilian and Portuguese media on Twitter.
“Paulo Sousa informed me today that he would like to terminate his contract with the association by mutual agreement.” Sousa received another job offer. The Polish Football Association does not want to accept this, said Kulesza.
“This is extremely irresponsible behavior, and it does not match what the coach said earlier, so I refused to agree,” Kulesza wrote. The Polish TV news channel TVN24 suspects that the offer to Sousa came from the Brazilian club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro. Whether the coach and the Polish Football Association can agree on the next steps will probably be decided on Monday.
Sousa has only been the Polish national coach since January 2021. Under his leadership, Poland disappointed at the European Championships in June and finished last in Group E with two defeats and one draw in the group stage.
